Professional Truck Training Alliance of Canada Encourages Stricter Regulation and Enforcement

On May 16th Ontario’s Minister of Transportation, Prabmeet Sarkaria introduced The Safer Roads and Communities Act - a bill that provides additional powers to MTO enforcement officers and initiates a comprehensive review of commercial driver training.

This announcement is welcome news to the Professional Truck Training Alliance of Canada (PTTAC), the unified voice of commercial truck training in Canada.

Jim Campbell, Chairperson of the Alliance says, “This act aligns with our mandate and key objectives of the board and membership of the PTTAC. Two of our group’s key objectives are to address oversight of training facilities and to harmonize regulation and compliance for all schools across Canada”.

The PTTAC will be hosting meetings with members, government, and industry stakeholders in Manitoba and Saskatchewan in June and will attend the Annual CCMTA Conference in Edmonton to continue to share their mandate and gain industry support.

Other key objectives include;

  • Make commercial truck driving a recognized Red Seal Trade in Canada.

  • Create nationally approved truck training instructor programs.

  • Remove barriers and bring accessibility to funding and tuition for truck training programs.

“Our Ontario members, many who have been around for decades and have produced tens of thousands of entry-level commercial drivers want to see better and stricter enforcement of commercial driver training facilities. This is not only an Ontario problem, regulation and enforcement needs to be improved across Canada” added Campbell.

“There have been many consultations across Canada with industry about regulation and enforcement. It is time to stop consulting and start implementing the necessary regulations and enforcement with the “licencing mills” in the country and to raise the bar on road safety” concluded Campbell.
